CH - Video Analysis Two, The Anthem

I love this video by Filo & Peri (Featuring Eric Lumiere). Much like the video for One (Your Name) it includes a lot of CUs and ECUs to create backstory through iconography and association, whilst maintaining a narrative.
The video features a male character being followed by the audience as he continues on a journey, aided by strangers and how he then impacts these strangers (such as them dissapearing from shot, slowly fading or showing their reaction). I dislike how the over-use of transitions causes the opening to the video to become distorted and disjointed; the rythym of the song is a simple beat, which isnt fitted with the fast transition cutting rate. However, the style of the video is extremely interesting. The shot above is an example of this; the male character is shown the way by a strange boy who sits alone in a dark alley. We as the audience connote many things from this, and it could be read in many different fashions; the boy knows the man, and is helping him; the boy is a figment of the mans imagination, etc etc. The aesthetics of the video are dark and dingy, inner-city graffiti and rubbish strewn alleyways. I like the way this plays on the narrative, adding an element of danger into a relatively sad story of a lost love written in the lyrics.

I love the technical shots used in this video, much like those of One (Your Name). The frequency and difference between the types of shot add an urgency to a relatively slow track.

The montage above describes an idea that I would like to pitch to the rest of the group; the idea of a journey. The character above follows clues left around the city in places that are obviously relavent to his relationship with the character the lyrics are written about. This makes the audience more included in their relationship, relating the places to places they themselves may have shared with people in the past. The journey leads to many different secondary characters and locations, as well as creating the motion of movement all of which contribute to an interesting visual experience that keeps the audience intruiged.
Thinking about the exploration we could do with a theme like A Journey, I am immediately drawn to the idea. Using many different locations could be difficult, but it could be a journey like that in One (Your Name) which occurs in one location, more a journey of characters and progression. I like the emphasis on small details within both videos, such as the use of CUs and ECUs on things such as train tickets and mobile phone screens, which not only add to the iconography of indie music but relate to the audience and make us feel more involved by giving a more in depth insight.

  1. These two posts are very good and informative. It's good to see that you have been exploring genres beyond those that have already been recomended. Do you have any ideas for songs that we could use that come from this genre?

  2. CH - I had a few track ideas we could use from this genre, but many of them already have official videos; also, this genre would be so much more intricate in the filming process, needing a higher budget (as it probably couldnt ride on the lo-fi aesthetics that indie music videos favour and fit well) if One hadn't had an official video i would have suggested that, but otherwise i quite liked that song you showed us earlier?
