RC - Individual response to our track

'Technodanceaphobic' - The Enemy

1) - Post a link to track:

2) - What is the genre of the track? How can you tell?
From the genre of the band you could argue that this track is rock, however, I feel that there are also elements of alternative and indie to this song. I think that this is because of the instruments being played within this track, which include drums, bass and electric guitars. The track has an authentic sound to it, which I feel is down to the originality of the song without the use of any sound enhancements.

3) - Do you think this track represents a high or low fi video? Why?
I believe that this track definitely represents a low fi video, especially because of the style and genre of this track, as it is typical of any sort of rock band, specifically British, to focus more on the song and the performance rather than the commercial side, with the use of visual effects, etc. Locations for this sort of song seem to be accessible ones, with settings such as a house party or a studio for a performance. Obviously we wouldn't be able to afford to hire out a studio, but we have our school drama studio that we can use.

4) - Some comparable videos include:
  • The Script - 'Break Even': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB3nx71zl8U&ob=av2n
  • Hard Fi - 'Living for the weekend': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBS8npnEGIM&ob=av2n
  • The Kooks - 'Sofa song': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uy0-6HYMhk&ob=av2e
With The Script's 'Break Even' video, it seems quite low fi and reasonably achievable. However, it is the combination of performance and narrative that makes me feel it is comparable to our video. I also like the natural feel to it, an effect that we hope to achieve with our video as well.

Hard Fi's video for 'Living for the weekend' is all about the performance, and although we do not wish our video to be exactly similar to this, I felt it was comparable in the way that we can learn from how they performed so to make our performance scenes as realistic as possible.

The Kooks' - 'Sofa song' is a great video, as it offers us potential editing techniques that we can play around with. Such examples would be when stills are used to create a montage of the girl that the lead singer is singing about. In our video on of our ideas was to use a montage of stills as well, so we can be inspired by how The Kooks' achieve this effect.

5) - Find out the budget for one of the above examples.

6) - Give an outline of a treatment.
We have decided that we are definitely going to combine a performance and a narrative for our video. The idea is that we are going to follow the lyrics of the song and have the four characters that are described by the song, as the main storyline. Once each character has been described they are going to join the band in the performance scene and begin to play their own instrument until all characters have been described and they are all performing.

7) - Identify suitable locations for filming particular sequences of the music.
  • Drama studio for performance scenes
  • House for party scene
  • Street(s) for characters to walk down (drunkenly...)
  • Inside of car to fit the lyrics..."banging on the back seat all night long..."
8) - Consider grain of voice. What characters would you use?
The lead singer is a male with a strong, British accent, therefore in the performance scenes the acting lead singer will replicate this description. When singing he has quite a shouting, old fashioned voice, so I imagine his character being quite messily dressed. The rest of the characters will also be British, and from the lyrics of the song will portray either a good/bad girl, a good/bad boy, or just be part of a crowd.

9) - What pro-filmic and post-production special effects would be suitable?
From what I know of we are not planning on using many special effects, as we are on intent on producing a video which is natural and realistic. However, if we are to go with the idea of creating a montage of stills, a lot of post-production editing will be needed to compile this. Some parts may also need to sped up to fit in with the party scenes, so more editing will be needed for this.

10) - Who else would you need to 'employ' to help you with this production?
We need people who would be willing to act. We need four people to play the main character roles and then several others in order to form a small crowd. We then need people who can either play instruments, or give the impression of doing so, convincingly, to play the band mates for the performance scenes. In other areas I think that me and the rest of my group have it covered, but obviously we will willingly receive any offered help from our teachers.
