CH - Video Analysis One, One (Your Name)

The above is a video called One (Your Name) by the Swedish House Mafia. They are an alternative/Electronic Dance Music band that have only recently achieved mass popularity.
I was drawn to this video for its combined simplicity and complexity; on first glance, it is hugely complex, with layers upon layers of intricately designed shots and scenes with innumerable characters and technical shots that would seem to be way above our ability (such as the shot at 0:56 left, of an extreme close up of an eye with the words "Wanna know your name" superimposed into it). However, upon repeating the video many times over, I realized that the shots were no different to those we have experienced in the past; even the shot at 0:56 is a very reachable reality, especially with our access to new HD Cameras that can record ECUs in higher quality than our old DV equipment, and our technical experience with editing software such as imposing a tag line into a frame which would result in much the same affect as the shot above. The simplicity of the video is that of a combined narrative and performance, but only filmed at a single location with layering of numerous shots and a fast cutting rate to add the impression of being complicated. The video opens with ECUs of a performance on a type of Chaos Pad (a technical instrument for creating EDM), with clean cut professional shots with an almost clinical environment, getting steadily more cluttered and colour-saturated as the narrative of a party continues until at the end all is destroyed and is left in ruin. We could aspire to create a similar style of video; with our new equipment, and access to facilities such as the school studios or music laboritories, we could theoretically create a video in homage to this... although whether these aesthetics would fit with the genre of our track is questionable. It would be a technical video that would undoubtebly need incredible planning and storyboarding, but I believe that the finished image would be worth the effort. This video is unique in that it has very few meat shots, unlike Atypical music videos that are often seen as advertisements (such as the shot of Taio Cruz, above) and has the feel of a piece of visual artwork, focussing less on the artist and more on the aesthetics of the video in creating an interesting narrative for focussed viewing. I would like to encompass these ideas into our own video, as I feel exploring artistically as well as from a filmmaking point of view would greatly benefit our video and lead to a more interesting product as well as a more enjoyable, in depth building process.

  1. A very interesting video - you could take some visual ideas from here quite easily

How is the genre/track 'represented' here? Representation of gender?
