JM - Representation in music videos

In order to address the issue of representation I looked at Jamie T - 'Sticks and Stones'. In this video we see our key demographic of young, white males being represented. Due to the fact that our band is entirely young males we will therefore be needing them in our video. To see how they were represented in other similar media texts I decieded to look at how this particular video showed young, white males.
In this video we can see that Jamie T brings across the 'playful' and 'hellraiser' sides to young males. We see this through the use of Mise-En-Scene, in which we see a clown, alcohol and smoking. All of these aspects connote being 'bad' and 'rebellious', which is what the media's stereotype of young, white males, especially those of a working class background.
The use of location in this video shows us something about life in the urban areas of London. The areas are very run down and grey. This coupled with the costume of the people appearing in the video suggests that the males in the video are working class. This there for signifies that young males of working class backgrounds are the types of people who take part in 'deviant' activities such as underage drinking and smoking.
The playful nature of this video come through the clown. It would appear that he is there in order to show that the video is playful and not at all serious. This connotes that the aggression and rebellion is not bad and is all part of being a young, british male.
In conclusion the people in this video are young white males, and they a represented as aggressive but playful, deviant and rebellious, through the use of Mise-en-Scene, costume and location.

  1. This is more like it - analytical and focused; providing useful ideas for your video - well done

Can you add a final comment explicitly saying how you might use this research in your own piece.
